“He from earth did suddenly retreat,
To the grand lodge above:
We trust he’s gone to take his seat,
Where masons dwell in love.”
Amos was born in Bolton, MA on October 31, 1750 to Joshua and Hannah (Ball) Johnson. He was the third of their four children.
He served during the Revolutionary War for the town of Worcester, as did his brother Joshua and several other men in Bolton.
On January 15, 1782 Amos married Elisabeth Pollard. They had at least two children: Lewis born in 1783, and Jonas born in 1784 and died aged 1 day. If they moved for a bit after the War they may have had other children who were not recorded in Berlin or Bolton. After Elizabeth’s death in 1813 Amos married Mrs. Maverick (Houghton) Cutting of Southborough, MA.
Amos' household at the time of the 1810 US Census had seven members. Besides Amos and Elisabeth there was one white male aged 10-15, one white female aged 10-15, one white male aged 16-25, one white female aged 26-44, and one white male over the age of 45, There were five people living in his household for the 1820 US Census. In addition to Amos and Maverick there was one white male aged 10-15, one white male over the age of 45, and one person engaged in agriculture, likely a man hired to work on the farm.
Amos was a member of the Trinity Lodge of Masons in Lancaster, MA. He became a member in 1778. Amos was a Junior Warden of the Lodge in 1793 and a Senior Warden in 1795.
He died in Berlin, MA on July 12, 1825 and rests in the Old Burying Ground.
