Benjamin Judd was born in Farmington, CT on March 2, 1697. He was the oldest of twelve children born to Sgt. Benjamin Jr. and Susannah (North) Judd. The Judds were one of the oldest white families in the area. Benjamin's great-grandfather Thomas Judd had come from England in the 1630s.
On November 9, 1727 he married Sarah Hollister of Glastonbury. They had two daughters: Sarah in 1729 and Mehetabel in 1732. The births of both girls was recorded in Farmington, but the family was living and farming in Glastonbury. Likely they moved shortly after their marriage and didn't join the Glastonbury church until a few years later (if at all)--changing churches back then was quite a process. Sarah and Mehitable both married but died young, Sarah at 35 and Mehitable at 25. When Sarah's son Nehemiah Bradley was old enough he started living with his grandparents to help with the farm.
Sarah died on May 1, 1770 and was buried in the Green Cemetery in Glastonbury.
Benjamin wrote his will a few weeks before his death. He made his mark instead of a signature, which indicates that unable to write out his signature. Perhaps he was illiterate, but more likely he had an infirmity. Benjamin had done quite well for himself, and was able to leave over 300 acres to his grandsons: Benjamin Bradley got the 100 acre "mountain lot" in Farmington, Edmund Bradley received 80 acres of farm land in Torrington. Nehemiah and Ichabod Bradley split the 80 acres of farm land in Farmington that Benjamin had received from his father, and the 156 acre farm in Glastonbury was to be divided between John, Elijah, and Elisha, the three sons of his daughter Mehitable Hollister. To his "not obedient" grandson Uriel Bradley he left 10 shillings. Granddaughter Sarah Bradley received all of the moveable estate not already disposed.
Benjamin Judd died in Glastonbury on January 30, 1774 and was buried next to his wife. The gravestones for both Benjamin and Sarah Judd were carved by Peter Buckland.
