Capt. Joseph Edward Kimball

Capt. Kimball was one of at least six children born in Ipswich, MA to John Kimball, Jr. and Rebecca (Gould) Kimball. His father was a cooper.
During the US Civil War Joseph served in the 1st Massachusetts Infantry as a Private, joining in May of 1862. He was commissioned 1st then 2nd Lieutenant in the 37th and 116th US Colored Regiments. During his service he took part in 37 battles, many of which are written on his gravestone. He was breveted Captain for gallant service at New Market Heights.
After the War Joseph found work as a machinist in Abington, MA. He married Ellen F. Jones in 1868. She died a year later aged only 20. He then married Susan “Susie” Ford Dunham in 1871. She also died young, passing away at the age of 30 in 1879. Three of their children would survive their father: Annie, John, and Josephine. In 1881 Joseph married Evelyn F. Collicott who survived him.
Capt. Kimball died from cirrhosis of the liver on February 22, 1896 in Brockton, MA. He and his family are buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery in Abington, MA.
