The gravestone of Hiram Grover Garfield

Hiram was born in Concord, MA to Albert A. and Amelia A. Garfield on March 28, 1888. Albert was a teamster and farmer, and lived in Reading, MA in the early 1900s and Melrose, MA in 1907. Hiram lived and worked with his father.

Hiram married Maude Evelyn Sheran of Boston around 1908. He was working as a train conductor and motorman, so the couple lived in various places. Hiram and Amelia’s son Anson Grover was born in Detroit, MI in 1909. His WWI draft card states that he has two children, but I can't find any record of that child's birth. In 1910 Hiram was living with his parents in Concord, MA and is curiously listed as being single. By 1916 the couple was living in Framingham, MA.

In 1917 Hiram registered for the WWI draft and was called into service. His paperwork describes him as being tall of medium build with blue eyes and brown hair. He was married with two children, and worked as a motorman for the Boston & Worcester Rail Road.

On September 23, 1918 Hiram died at Fort Devens. His cause of death was given as pneumonia at the time, but he was a casualty of the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918-1919.

He is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, MA.
