John Moore

John Moore was born in Worcester, MA to Asa and Sarah (Heywood) Moore on May 3, 1746. His mother was one of the first white children born in Worcester, and her family was among the earliest white families to settle there. John was the second of his parents' eight children.
He was one of three John Moores living in Worcester during the American Revolution and is difficult to figure out which man did which service in some cases. Adding to the fun are the many different spellings of Moore: Mor, More, Moer, Mower, Moor, etc. This John Moore was a Private in Captain David Moore’s Company and may also have been a Private in Captain Chadwick’s Company.
John married Persis/Patience Gates on August 18, 1768 after publishing their intentions to wed on July 16, and they had three children: Asa, Sally, and Persis. Persis the mother died from childbirth complications in September of 1775. Persis the daughter lived and married Silas Gleason in 1795. John published intentions to marry Mary Gurney on April 6, 1776 and they were married on April 24. They had six children: Daniel, John, Molly, twins Archibald and Artemas, and Levi.
John died in late October of 1831 in Worcester. He was interred in one of the other burying grounds in Worcester, most likely Mechanic Street Burial Ground, before being moved to Hope Cemetery. The modern gravestone that lists him and his wives is a family grave marker and replaced their earlier gravestones.
