Joseph Fisher

Joseph was born on July 21, 1805 in West Dedham, MA to Benjamin and Abigail (Baker) Fisher.


His first wife was Hannah Baker, daughter of Sabin and Abigail (Richards) Baker. They published their marriage intentions on January 22, 1826 and married on March 26. Together they had five children. Hannah died October 29, 1853 at the age of 48.


On May 14, 1857 Joseph married Mary Elizabeth Campbell. They had four children. One of their daughters, Elizabeth Campbell Clay, was a successful artist. Another daughter, Lady Hattie Fisher-Smith, married Sir George Henry Fisher-Smith. The daughters met their husbands while on a Grand Tour of Europe.


Joseph was a farmer, stable master, and horse trader. His oldest son George worked with him. Joseph also owned shares in two merchant ships.


He died in West Dedham on August 13, 1880 of an intussusception of the bowels, and was laid to rest in Westwood Cemetery in Westwood, MA.
