Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury, MA. Located just behind the Congregational Church, the first know burials took place there soon after Shrewsbury was founded in 1727. It has seen continuous use since then and is still owned and maintained by the town. There are gravestones by many carvers there, and it makes for a lovely stroll!
The most famous grave there is that of General Artemis Ward, the leader of the Massachusetts militia companies during the first few weeks of the Revolutionary War. There are many other Revolutionary War veterans buried there as well.
Mountain View is lovely to visit any time of the day, but I prefer to go around mid-day or early afternoon taking photographs. Some of the more shaded areas don't have great lighting, but they are a great place to rest during the heat of the summer.
One big plus about Mountain View is the ample amount of parking both adjacent to the older section behind the church and inside the modern area. Just be respectful to the church parishioners and to those visiting their loved ones buried there.
The Shrewsbury Historical Society is located in the 1830 school house adjacent to the cemetery, and is well worth a visit when they are open. They have information about many of the cemetery's permanent residents.
