John was born in Williamstown, NC around 1769. His father's name was Samuel.
On December 22, 1791 he was married to Priscilla Cooper by Rev. Chandler Robbins in Plymouth, MA. Both lived in town. They had a total of four children, though only two would live through childhood: John Jr. and George William. The others, both named William Henry, both died before reaching their first birthday.
John was a mariner and trader, and quite successful if the inventory of his estate given in his will is to be believed. He also owned land in nearby Plimpton, and was part owner in a wool manufactory there.
In 1810 he was still living in Plymouth with his wife and youngest son, George William. The eldest son, John Jr., was either out on his own or away from home--he does not appear in the Census with the rest of his family.
Capt. John Sr. died on October 3, 1814 in Plymouth, and was laid to rest on Old Burial Hill. Priscilla remarried and lived until 1853.
His son John died at sea in 1822 aboard his ship the Betsey on the voyage home from St. Ubes (modern Setúbal) in Portugal.
