White bronze obelisk of the Mead family

Marshall S. Mead was born in Medford, MA on October 16, 1811. He was a farmer, and made his home in Scituate, Leicester, and later Paxton.

On December 28, 1842 he married Mrs. Tirza W. Tucker of Spencer. She was born on October 15, 1806 and was the widow of Amasa Bemis.

Together Marshall and Tirza had at least two children: Charles T. and George W. The family took in Marshall’s mother Sally after the death of her second husband, Abel Green.

Tirza died first in November of 1889, and Marshall followed her a few months later in March of 1890. Their son George is also memorialized on the family grave marker in the Center Cemetery in Paxton.

The inscription on the side reads:

PEACEFUL BE THY SILENT SLUMBERS,

PEACEFUL IN THY GRAVES SO LOW;

THOU NO MORE WILL JOIN OUR NUMBER

THOU TO MORE OUR SONG WILL KNOW.

YET AGAIN WE HOPE TO MEET THEE,

WHEN THE DAY OF LIFE IS FLED;

AND IN HEAVEN WITH JOY TO GREET THEE,

WHERE NO FAREWELL TEARS ARE SHED.
