The Whyman Family

This unique gravestone marks the final resting place of Reverend Henry Emanuel Whyman, his wife Louise Maria (Andersson) Whyman, their son Bertil Emanuel Whyman, and Bertil’s wife Gerda Elvira (Wolsey) Whyman.


Reverend Whyman was born in Roslags-Kulla, Sweden (near Stockholm) on October 26, 1860 to Henrick A. Whyman and Wilhelmina C. Brunstedt. He came to the US in 1886, and became a citizen in 1888. Reverend Whyman was the Minister of the First Swedish Methodist Church in the Quinsigamond Village neighborhood of Worcester.


Louise Maria Andersson was born in Kvistbro, Sweden to Andrew Erickson and Christina S. Olson on June 28, 1879. The family immigrated to the US in 1882 and settled in Worcester, MA.


The couple was married in Worcester on December 26, 1901. Shortly after they moved to the Boston area. The family moved around quite a bit. Their oldest children, Henry and Ruth, were born in Massachusetts. Bertil was born in New York, and Doris in Connecticut. By 1920 they were in Malden, MA where Rev. Whyman was the Minister of the Swedish Methodist Episcopal Church.


Rev. Whyman died in Malden on November 14, 1920. Louise died in Concord, MA on March 7, 1978. She outlived her husband for 68 years, and was 98 years old at the time of her death. They rest together in the Old Swedish Cemetery in Worcester, MA.
