This is the grave of Edward Carter (1697-1742) in Boston’s Granary Burying Ground. He was a silk dyer and scourer who ran a shop on Cambridge Street near Lynne Street in the West End of Boston.
The epitaph takes up the majority of his gravestone and is put higher than his name. Quiet is a bit ironic, since this is one of the loudest and most visited parts of Boston.
“Farewell Vain World I have Enough Of The
And Now I’m Careles what thou Say of me
What Fault thou See in me
Take Care to Shun
There worke within thy Self
That Should be Done
Thy Smiles I Court not nor thy Frowns I fear
My Cares are past my head lies quiet here.”
